Transforming the Grief of Military Sexual Violence to the Desire for a New Life:

Artwork by the Daughter and Grand-daughter of Jan Ruff-O’Herne

Linking Japan, Sydney and Melbourne, an on-line seminar will be conducted to learn how the daughter and grand-daughter of one of many victims of sexual violence committed by the Japanese Imperial Army successfully transformed the grief of violence to a strong desire to live through their artwork. This seminar is organized and presented by Hiroshima Network for the Solution of Japan’s Military ‘Comfort Women’ Issue.

Jan Ruff-O’Herne:

Jan was born in 1923 into a wealthy family who owned a sugar-cane plantation and sugar factory near Semarang in central Java in the Dutch East Indies (presently Indonesia). In 1942, when she was 19 years old, the Dutch forces on Java surrendered to the Japanese and on March 8 about 100,000 Dutch people were detained in POW camps and civilian internment camps. About 47,000 women and children were separated from the rest of the people and interned in several different camps set up outside Semarang. Jan was sent to one of these - Ambarawa No. 6 Camp - together with her mother and two younger sisters. In February 1944, 16 young women from the camp, including Jan, were sent to a “comfort station” and detained. For the following two months they were badly abused by Japanese Army officers. Jan revealed her past as a victim of sexual violence for the first time in 1992. She was encouraged by a Korean woman, Kim Hak-Sun, who had recently come forward as one of Japan’s military sex slaves. From then until the end of her life, she actively pursued Japan’s responsibility for such war atrocities and demanded an apology from the Japanese government.

Speakers:

Carol Ruff (Jan’s daughter) is an artist, film maker and musician. During the 80s and 90s she produced dozens of large, exterior, social-realist murals in Australia and PNG, focusing on Aboriginal rights, women’s issues, and community, including Redfern Railway Bridge mural 40,000 Years is a Long Long Time, Adelaide Festival Theatre mural, Aboriginals Discovered Cook, and The Domain, Women on the Edge of Town. In 1995 she co-produced the documentary film 50 Years of Silence, after her mother, former ‘comfort woman’ Jan Ruff O’Herne, spoke out about war time atrocities. The film won many awards including the AFI Award, TV Logie for Most Outstanding Documentary and the Asia Pacific Festival Award. She has produced a number of solo exhibitions, including four exhibitions of paintings about her mother’s life and war time experiences; ‘Java to Gepps Cross’ toured nationally and ‘No Hiding Place’ was shown at the Migration Museum in Adelaide. Carol has exhibited at Australian Galleries in Sydney, the Araluen Centre, Alice Springs and Hogarth Gallery, Sydney. She now lives in Sydney where she is the director of Gallery East.

Ruby Challenger (Jan’s grand-daughter) is a director who has recently completed her Masters of Screen in Directing at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). She has been on film sets since her first moments out of the hospital as a newborn. Following her unofficial education in filmmaking, her career in the film industry began in the Art and Costume departments, which took her all around Australia while she learned the ropes of filmmaking. Her first short film as Director/Producer/Writer, Daily Bread, played at festivals around Australia and the world and winning awards like the St Kilda Film Festival People’s Choice. At AFTRS, she directed a horror short film, Hyde, which is enjoying a festival run and then her major work, the musical short, MumLife. She is currently developing the feature film based on Jan Ruff's life.

2021 End of Year Message

In last year’s Message, I wrote the following:

Throughout the world this year people have experienced extraordinary difficulties associated with deep fear, millions of deaths, poverty, violence, political oppression and racism. Yet many political leaders, particularly in the US, Japan, and here in Australia too, have behaved like corrupt mafia and neglected their duties as politicians. Most of the problems heightened by the pandemic are man-made ones – problems that Norwegian sociologist Johan Galtung calls “structural violence.” These problems cannot be resolved without the consolidated effort of people across the world. At the same time, we are facing another kind of pandemic - the climate crisis. Tackling this also requires our combined endeavors.

Unfortunately the situation has not changed greatly, and has possibly even worsened since the end of the last year. It seems that various social problems associated with the pandemic have caused deep fear as well as psychological problems among the populace. In turn, this has instigated wide-spread hatred and discrimination against “the other”. Accordingly, such hatred and discrimination are further brutalizing and dehumanizing everyone.

Similarly to last year, I hope the following poem illustrated by Michael Leunig, as well as some music I have chosen, will provide you with tranquility and enable you to ponder the peaceful and environmentally sound world we should strive to create.

This year I have chosen pieces of music performed by two musicians who live with disabilities - one who was born without arms, and the other who was born blind. When I discovered these musicians, my first thought was that it must be extremely difficult to become a professional musician when faced with such adversity. It was only after looking deeper into their individual stories that I realised these musicians are able to understand their own bodies, abilities, and skills in a way that I cannot. While it is almost incomprehensible to me that someone without arms can master a musical instrument, for someone who was born in this way, perhaps it is not strange at all.

Felix Klieser is a German musician who started playing the French horn at the age of 4, and graduated from the Hanover University of Music. In 2016 he received the Leonard Bernstein Award, and he is currently the artist in residence at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in England. I was forced to reconsider my perception of his disability when he responded to a question about how he plays - ‘I don’t know, I’ve never played with hands. I can’t understand how you can hold a pencil with those long fingers because the coordination is difficult.’

Nobuyuki Tsujii was born as a blind person in Japan in 1988. He started formal piano study at the age of 4, and in 2011 graduated from Ueno Gakuen University (major in piano). In 2000, at age 12, he gave his first piano recital in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and has been playing to audiences across Japan ever since. In 2005, he was a semifinalist and received the Critics’ Award at the 15th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition (Poland), and in 2009 was awarded the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (USA). Tsujii is also a composer and has released numerous albums featuring his own work. He is internationally renowned and performs both orchestral and solo shows across the globe.

The next piece of music in my selection is “Ave Verum Corpus” composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In 1791 Mozart’s wife, Constanze, was confined to a month-long stay at a hot spring sanitarium in Baden due to illness. Mozart had to rely on the financial support from his friend Anton Stoll, a chorus master in Baden, and he composed this piece for Stoll as payment. It is a short but exquisite hymn.

My final musical recommendation is a classic shakuhachi piece entitled Sanan, which means “safe birth.” It was played by Grand Master Yokoyama Katsuya (1934-2010) at the concert celebrating the 60th birthday of Ozawa Seiji in 1995. Ozawa was the music director and conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the time. In 1967, Yokoyama played shakuhachi with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Ozawa. This was the first time that a western symphony orchestra played with two Japanese instruments – shakuhachi and biwa. It was a great success. I like to think that this was the beginning of a treasured friendship between Yokoyama and Ozawa.

Sanan is a traditional shakuhachi piece passed down over hundreds of years in Echigo (now Niigata), Japan. It is said that it was played to ensure the safe birth of a child, and for the good-health of the mother’s recovery. However, I wonder if it was composed for mourning a stillborn child or a mother who died shortly after giving birth. It seems to me this piece of shakuhachi music is full of sorrow, although truly beautiful and powerful.

With best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Safe New Year !

Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine.

Vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine

cujus latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine.

O Iesu dulcis,

O Iesu pie,

O Iesu Fili Mariae. Amen.
