2018 End of Year Message

Season’s Greetings and Best Wishes for the New Year.
As the end-of-year festive season quickly approaches, I would again like to share with readers of my blog a short but quiet moment to release ourselves psychologically from the current grim world situation, by reading a poem by the brilliant Australian cartoonist and poet, Michael Leunig, and by listening to a few pieces of fine music. I have selected the following poem with a lovely cartoon and five pieces of music. To me, they are exquisite and moving.

1) Theme from Schindler's List
Played by 2CELLOS - Luka Sulic (Slovanian) and Stjepan Hauser (Croatian).
Sulic and Hauser formed the duo 2CELLOS in 2012.
This piece, composed by the American composer, conductor and pianist, John Williams, is the main theme of the film Schindler's List, produced in 1993. The film, which was directed by Steven Spielberg, is based on the novel Schindler's Ark by the Australian novelist, Thomas Keneally. In October 1980, during a trip to the U.S., Keneally visited a briefcase shop in Beverly Hills in California, owned by a Jewish man by the name of Pfefferberg. Pfefferberg told Keneally that he and his wife were among the survivors of Schindler’s list. This unexpected meeting was the beginning of Keneally’s research into this remarkable, true story.

2) Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor
Cello: Stjepan Hauser
Although this piece is often called Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor, and attributed to the 18th Century Venetian master, Tomaso Albinoni, it was not in fact composed by Albinoni. Rather, it is the work of Remo Giazotto who composed this music based on a manuscript fragment written by Albinoni. It is said that Giazotto obtained this fragment – consisting of a few opening measures of the melody line and the basso continuo part - shortly after the end of World War II. It was found in the ruins of the Saxon State Library in Dresden. The Library building was destroyed by the indiscriminate bombing of Dresden conducted by the British and U.S. air forces between 13 and 15 February in 1945. This reckless fire bombing killed about 25,000 people, mostly civilians.

3) Pie Jesu composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Sung by Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston
This piece is a part of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem. It is said that inspiration for Webber’s Requiem was the result of two separate tragedies: a journalist who had interviewed him only a few weeks before dying in Northern Ireland as a result of an IRA attack; and a Cambodian boy who was forced to murder his own sister or be executed himself. Webber's Requiem was first performed at the St. Thomas Church in New York City on February 25, 1985. Both Sarah Brightman (who, at the time, was Webber’s wife) and Paul Miles-Kingston performed in this concert.

“Pie Jesu” English Translation
Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus. Father, who takes away the sins of the world.
Grant them rest, grant them rest.
Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus. Father, who takes away the sins of the world. Grant them rest, grant them rest.
Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God. Father, who takes away the sins of the world.
Grant them rest, grant them rest
, everlasting,
everlasting,
rest.

4) Oh Holy Night/The First Noel
By Fujiwara Dōzan (shakuhachi), and Slava Kagan-Paley (counter tenor)
Fujiwara started learning shakuhachi from his grandmother when he was 10 years old, and from 14 he began studying under the late Yamamoto Hōzan, a living national treasure. He is currently one of the most popular shakuhachi players in Japan, capable of playing a variety of music – from popular to classic and from Western to Japanese music – on this instrument. Slava Kagan-Paley was born in Gomel, Belorussia, and as a child he studied violin and piano. However, in 1976, he won the first television and radio competition for young performers in Minsk, as a singer. In 1987, he began singing at the Belorussian Academic Capella. He now lives in Tel Aviv.

5) Shika no Tōne (Howling Deers)
By Yorita Mamino (Shakuhachi)
Yorita began learning shakuhachi at the age of 8, and in 2013 graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Art & Music, majoring in shakuhachi. She is now one of very few female shakuhachi grand-master players in Japan. This performance was conducted at the Miho Museum, a magnificent building designed by world-renowned architect, I.M. Pei, in the mountains of Shiga Prefecture. It was an ideal venue to play this extraordinarily beautiful piece of classic shakuhachi music.
