2022 End of Year Message

2022年　年末メッセージ（日本語版は英語版の後をご覧ください）

 

Earlier this year, I had hoped that 2022 would be the year that COVID-19 infections would come to an end. Unfortunately, the situation remains the same. On top of this, in February, Russia's military aggression against Ukraine quickly developed into a large-scale war, and as feared, the situation soon became a quagmire with no sign of ending. Large numbers of civilians were killed and wounded, and many houses, buildings, factories and social infrastructure facilities were destroyed. The number of Ukrainian refugees who have been forced to flee their homes and spread to Europe is estimated at over 7.8 million.

But the war in Ukraine has not been the only influence forcing people to leave their homes and scatter across the world. Displaced people are currently concentrated in the poorest and low-to-middle income countries: 6.8 million refugees from Syria, 4.6 million from Venezuela, 2.7 million from Afghanistan, 2.4 million from South Sudan, 1.2 million from Myanmar to mention a few. At the end of 2021, the number of internally displaced persons and refugees worldwide was 53.2 million and 27.1 million, respectively, with 40% of them children (data source: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).

Refugee children in the poorest countries are often denied minimum food, health care, and educational opportunities; and it is easy for the world to turn a blind eye and pretend they don’t exist. As the grandfather of a 16-month old grandchild, I cannot help but feel deeply concerned about those displaced children and their future. 

 

I am sending an end-of-year message to you all, as I do each year, praying that the coming year will be a little better.

 Piano Soloists

 

Sakamoto Ryuichi:
This is theme song of the film “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” directed by Nagisa Oshima. The film depicts the complex relationships in a Japanese POW camp on the island of Java between a brutal Japanese sergeant, the supposedly homosexual camp commander, and their captors (including a British Army major and an RAF colonel). Sakamoto plays the camp commander and David Bowie the British Army Major – it is an unusual film in the sense that two musicians play major roles in this film. Sakamoto is currently suffering from terminal cancer and, sadly, it is unlikely that we will ever have the opportunity to hear him perform live again. This song feels to me like a sad and beautiful rendition that reflects on how difficult it is for human beings to live in peace and harmony.

Keith Jarrett:

Londonderry Air (Danny Boy). 

Keith Jarrett is an American jazz and classical pianist. He is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays the soprano saxophone, harpsichord and recorder. He is a wonderful performer who always concentrates on trying to unite himself with the music, both physically and mentally; and this performance is no exception.

Tsujii Nobuyuki:

Claude Debussy’s L'Isle Joyeuse.

This performance was included in the concert entitled “Nobuyuki Tsujii PIANO×ART ‘IMPRESSIONISM’” on October 18th, 2021.

The piano performance, which sounds like flowing water, matches perfectly with Katsushika Hokusai’s prints depicting various bodies of water including waterfalls and ocean waves. Tsujii is a blind pianist, and I feel that the more his piano playing advances, the more transparent, refined, and graceful it becomes. As Tsujii is still a young artist, I am very much looking forward to seeing how his music develops in the future. I have no doubt he will become a great Maestro, who will leave his mark on music history.

Cello 

 

Choi Hayoung (Korean):

Haydn, Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major, Hob.VIIb:1. 

Choi is a young performer, 24 years old, who in June this year won the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition for Cello in Belgium (one of the three major music competitions in the world). This concerto has often been performed by cello greats such as Rostropovich (1927-2007), who has several recordings of this piece. One might think that a young performer like Choi would be very nervous to play such a highly regarded piece of music. However, in this recording she seems very relaxed and appears to enjoy playing, and the orchestral players who accompany her seem to enjoy it as well. It is a truly wonderful performance to watch. I think she is a performer who will become a great cellist in the future.

Wadaiko (Japanese Drum)

 

Tamura Yusuke:

I taught modern and contemporary Japanese history and Japanese cultural history at Keiwa Gakuen University, a small Christian university in Niigata, Japan, for a brief two-year period in 2000 and 2001. One of the students in my seminar class at that time was Tamura Yusuke. He started learning taiko when he was in primary school, and by the time he was a university student he was already an excellent, semi-professional taiko player. He was a "cool" student who always wore samue (Japanese kimono style top and trousers originally worn by the Zen monks) to university classes, and we hit it off immediately. I also love samue and Japanese music instruments, and so we had much in common. Tamura became a professional taiko drummer after graduating, and now teaches taiko classes for children, performs at banquets and weddings, and does public performances at shopping malls and local festivals. He  formed a group called “Karyu” with the young people he teaches and continues to perform with the group alongside his solo work.

Over the past three years, due to the Covid-19, I was concerned that Tamura’s opportunities to perform were drastically reduced. Fortunately, he has managed to maintain his professional music career, and I wish him the best of luck. I hope that I will be able visit Niigata to listen to  "Karyu" perform when I travel to Japan in the future.

The performance of the piece called "Miyake" is a truly powerful and brilliant one. Yusuke's solo performance starts at around 3:35 minutes from the start, and it makes me want to yell "Bravo!”

２０２２年　年末メッセージ

 

今年初め、今年こそはコロナ感染症が終息するだろうと期待したのですが、その期待は見事に裏切られました。それに加えて、２月にはロシアのウクライナに対する軍事侵略で大規模な戦争が始まり、恐れていたように、状況はすぐに泥沼化して収束する兆しは全く見えなくなりました。また、大勢の市民が殺傷され、多くの家屋・建物・工場や社会基盤施設が破壊され、故郷を追われヨーロッパに拡散しているウクライナ難民の数は７８０万人以上と言われています。

しかし、世界に散在する国内避難民や国外難民は、もちろんウクライナ戦争の犠牲者だけではありません。シリアからの難民は６８０万人、ベネゼラから４６０万人、アフガニスタンから２７０万人、南スーダン２４０万人、ミャンマー１２０万人などなど、むしろ最貧国や低・中所得国に集中しています。２０２１年末の時点で、世界の国内避難数は５,３２０万人、難民数が２,７１０万人と驚くべき数字になっています。そのうちの４割が子どもだと言われています。（データー出典：国連難民高等弁務官事務所)

最貧国の子どもたちは最低限の食糧医薬品や教育機会を与えられないだけではなく、存在しているということにすら注目されない、この状況。１歳４ヶ月の孫がいる身としては、子どもたちの未来に深い不安を覚えずにはいられません。

 

毎年のことですが、新しく来る年が少しでも良くなるように祈りつつ、年末メッセージをみなさんに送ります。まずは、例年の如く、マイケル・ルーニッグの作品の紹介です。

 ＊ピアノ独奏

坂本龍一：

自作の大島渚監督「戦場のメリークリスマス」のテーマ曲「メリークリスマス、ミスター・ローレンス」（この映画は、ジャワ島の日本軍捕虜収容所における、朝鮮人軍属、残虐な軍曹、同性愛者と思われる収容所・所長、それに捕虜の英陸軍少佐や空軍大佐らとの複雑な人間関係を描いています。収容所・所長を坂本が、英陸軍少佐をデイビッド・ボウイの二人の音楽家が演じている、珍しい映画作品）。坂本は現在末期癌を病んでおり、ひじょうに残念ながら、彼の演奏を生で聴く機会はもうほとんどないであろうと思われます。この曲は、人間が互いに安らかな関係の中で生きていくことの難しさを、哀しくも美しく奏でているように私には思えます。

キース・ジャレット：

「ロンドン・デリーの歌」（アイルランド民謡。いろいろ違った歌詞で歌われるが「ダニー・ボーイ」と題された歌が最もポピュラー）キース・ジャレットはアメリカのジャズ・ピアニストでもあり、同時にクラシック音楽のピアニストでもあり、さらにソプラノサックス、ハープシコードやリコーダなども演奏してしまう、マルチ・プレイヤー。演奏するときは徹底的にその音楽と心身ともに一体となろうと集中する、素晴らしい演奏家で、この演奏も例外ではないです。

辻井伸行：

ドビュッシー作曲「喜びの島」

２０２１年１０月１８日の「辻井伸行 音楽と絵画コンサート 《印象派》」と題されたコンサートに含まれていた演奏。誰が考えたのか知りませんが、水が流れるようなピアノ演奏と北斎の瀧落や荒波の水を描いた版画が見事にマッチしています。全盲の辻井の奏でるピアノの音は、歳を重ねるごとにますます透明で洗練された優美な音になってきているように私には思えます。まだ若いので、将来、どこまで卓越し、歴史に名を残すピアニストになるのか、とても楽しみです。

＊チェロ演奏

チェ・ハヨン（韓国人）：

ハイドン作曲「チェロ協奏曲第１番ハ長調 Hob.VIIb:1」。チェ・ハヨンは今年６月、世界３大音楽コンクールの一つと言われているベルギーのエリザベート王妃国際音楽コンクールのチェロ部門で優勝した、２４歳という若手の演奏家。この曲は、チェロの巨匠ロストロポーヴィチ（１９２７〜２００７年）などもしばしば演奏しており、幾つも録音が残っていますので、彼女のような若手の演奏家は、同じ曲を演奏するにはとても緊張するのではないかと思うのですが。ところが彼女は、この曲をコンクールのセミファイナルで演奏しているにもかかわらず、とてもリラックスして、演奏を心から楽しんでおり、伴奏のオーケストラの演奏家たちも一緒に楽しんでいるように見えます。聴いているほうも、実に楽しくなる演奏だと思います。彼女も、今後もっともっと成長する演奏家だと思われます。

＊和太鼓

新潟万代太鼓 華龍　田村祐介：

私は２０００年と２００１年の２年間だけの短い期間でしたが、新潟県芝田市にある小さなキリスト教の大学、敬和学園大学で日本近現代史・日本文化史を教えました。その時のゼミの学生の一人に、田村祐介くんがいました。彼は小学生時代から和太鼓を習い始め、大学生時代にはすでにセミプロとも言える素晴らしい和太鼓奏者でした。大学の授業にはいつも作務衣を着て出てくる、「かっこいい〜」学生で、作務衣と和楽器が大好きな私とはすっかり意気投合。彼は卒業するやプロの和太鼓奏者として独立。子どもたちのための和太鼓教室、宴会や結婚式での演奏、商店街や地域のお祭り・フェスティバルでの演奏などで生計をたてています。また、自分が教えている若者たちと一緒に「華龍」というグループも作り、演奏活動を続けています。

ところが、この３年間はコロナ感染症のため、演奏する機会が激減してしまったようで、どうやって活動を続けているのか心配していました。しかし、なんとかプロとして生活を維持しているようです。頑張って欲しいと思います。機会があれば、一時帰国の折には、「華龍」の演奏を聴きに、ぜひ新潟まで足を伸ばしたいと思っています。

７年前の演奏「三宅」は、実に力のこもった、猛烈でいて華麗な演奏です。演奏開始から３分３５秒あたりから田村くんの独演になりますが、「お見事！」と叫びたくなります。

Yuki：

最後に、恥ずかしながら、私自身の演奏を二曲紹介させていただきます。まだまだ未熟で、練習不足がモロに演奏にあらわれており、私の師匠の免出隆山先生やリンゼイ・ドゥーガンくんにとっては失笑ものかもしれませんが。

本調（ほんしらべ）：これは「祈り」のお経のような曲だと私は解釈しています。

手向（たむけ）：この曲は仏（亡くなった人の霊）に捧げる、西洋音楽で言えばレクイエム（鎮魂曲）と言えるものです。
